ISIS Plot To Assassinate Pope During Indonesia Visit Foiled
Drone, Bow, Arrows, and Propaganda Seized
Seven individuals believed to be ISIS terrorists were arrested during Pope Francis's visit to Indonesia.
The individuals were allegedly plotting to assassinate the chief of the Vatican but had their plans foiled when local law enforcement was tipped off.
The arrests were made between Sept. 2–3, 2024, and resulted in a search of a property that produced a drone, a bow, arrows, and ISIS propaganda leaflets.
Notably, the main bone of the militants’ contention was the pope's visit to a mosque in the country’s capital, Jakarta.
While there, national television stations were asked not to broadcast the day’s mosque call to prayer.
The extremist sympathizers then voiced threats on social media, drawing the attention of the local anti-terrorist division, Densus 88.
“We [also] have a mechanism to monitor and filter,” Colonel Aswin Siregar told the press.
“We had tip-off information from members of the public.”
